In today’s Gospel we see that the Apostles were lost without Jesus’ presence. While they continued to witness to the events surrounding the crucifixion, they still weren’t certain of what to do next. Jesus, who had not yet revealed himself to them, teaches them that He is the fulfillment of the prophesies, that He is the long-awaited Messiah who rose from the tomb to save mankind. They then have the haze removed from their vision and see the resurrected Christ during the breaking of the bread.
If we take the time to prepare ourselves before we celebrate the Lord’s Supper, we too will find our sight restored to the glory of the resurrected Jesus. We can then recognize our place in the Grand Communion, which is the entire Church, from the beginning until today, in celebration of the Eucharist which Christ instituted and instructed us to continue.
