In the end, abortion is about death. It is about the death that happens in a mother and a father when they lose a child. It is about a child that has died. It is about the death-dealing guilt that follows.
But the Gospel is about life. It is about the promise that, in Christ, the enemy that is death will be destroyed. When death is destroyed, what is left? Life. And more than that, life from the dead. Resurrection. All that was wrong has been made right. Like the first shoots of the daffodils in March that are a pledge the coming spring, so is Christ’s resurrection from the dead, the pledge that, in Christ, the dead will be raised to life, our sin forgiven, and our peace with God and with one another be restored.
We worship a risen Christ. Not a living Christ only, but a risen Christ. One who has died, and has been raised from the dead. To all who have known the bitterness of death, Christ is risen! Indeed!
For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness. I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. (Isaiah 65:17-19)
