Frederica Mathewes-Green once famously said, “No one wants an abortion as she wants an ice-cream cone or a Porsche. She wants an abortion as an animal, caught in a trap, wants to gnaw off its own leg.” Largely, her analogy is an accurate one. If you ask a woman why she had an abortion it’s often because she felt she wasn’t ready or didn’t have what she needed to care for the child, be it financially or emotionally. A woman exercises her “right to choose” while feeling like she doesn’t have a choice.
Pregnancy resource centers not only help women see what their choices really are but also provide them with the resources they need to care for their child. Pregnancy centers often provide practical baby items for expecting moms, offer parenting classes for both moms and dads, and set up adoption opportunities. Unlike abortion clinics, the goal of the pregnancy center is to care for both mothers and their unborn children. The Church is encouraged to celebrate and honor the difficult but wonderful work of pregnancy centers and thank God for the lives that have been saved through their ministry.
