Each month we will offer a list of action ideas so you can defend, honor, and celebrate Life in your churches and communities on our Take Action page. This month, we are looking at New York abortion laws.

As I am sure all of you have heard by now, last month New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law that legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy, changing previous law that protected the unborn after 24 weeks. The law also stripped protections for children born alive during an abortion procedure, a statue dealing with the disposal of children born alive during an abortion that later die, and a requirement that a second physician be in attendance during late term abortions, to potentially care for children who may survive. The law also took away the physician-only requirement, meaning that other types of healthcare workers can now perform abortions in New York. The state celebrated this horrific legislation by lighting up the One World Trade center in pink.

Sadly, New York is not alone in this. Vermont, Rhode Island, and New Mexico are also looking at either expanding abortion laws or removing safeguards in their states, and more will likely follow. Abortion supporting states are worried that Roe v. Wade will be overturned and are establishing laws to protect abortion rights in their individual states, when that day comes.

So many people nationwide have contacted us since the passing of the New York laws. They at first expressed shock and dismay. But they also asked a critical question—what can we do? Whatever the intent of the New York abortion laws, they have certainly galvanized life-affirming people in the Church!

But there lies the question—what can you do? The first thing you can do is this—contact us. Talk about setting up a Life Leader or Chapter in your church. Learn about local outreaches and pro-life groups. Let us help you find a pregnancy center in need of support near you. Share about what your church is passionate about and talented in and how we can help you use that to fuel life ministry.

Yes, the New York law has passed. It’s a deeply tragic thing. But this is not the time to stand still and grieve. This is the time to take the initiative, use the momentum, and protect God’s gift of life, from womb to tomb.
